The Situation of Girls and Women

High maternity morbidity, low female literacy rates and exceptionally high work loads are only a few keywords describing the situation of girls and women in Uganda, as in the rest of Africa. Traditional laws and practices still dominate the Ugandan society, even though the democratic constitution ratified in 1995 guarantees gender equality. Oppression, Rape, genital mutilation and violence by the husband are still part of the every day lives of women in Uganda. Thus, women run a particularly high risk of getting infected with HIV. In the Gender-related Development Index of the UN, which compares the situation of women, Uganda occupies a sad number 154 of 177 countries studied.
